Testicular Cancer Program (Germ Cell Tumors)
Germ cell tumors include most kinds of testicular cancer as well as extragonadal germ cell tumors.
These are relatively rare tumors. If managed early and correctly, these cancers may be curable in about 90 percent of patients.
Through our Rare Tumors Clinic, UC San Diego Health System offers highly specialized care for these tumors, including therapy by medical oncologists and surgeons who have extensive experience with these tumors and work closely to give the best treatment to each patient. These tumors often require complex surgeries. Our surgical oncologists are highly experienced with the extensive vascular repair required.
For patients with advanced or recurring disease, we have extensive experience with high-dose chemotherapy, including the use of stem cell support.
Fred Millard, MD, is the team co-leader for genitourinary oncology. He is a medical oncologist with nearly 30 years of experience. He specializes in testicular cancer and other germ cell tumors.
Christopher Kane, MD, chair of UC San Diego's Department of Urology, is internationally recognized for his expertise with these and similar tumors.
Our experience and multidisciplinary team allow us to deliver the best treatment plan for each patient. Each patient can also be discussed in depth at the Molecular Tumor Board, where our medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, and expert scientists can devise a personalized treatment plan.
