Gynecologic Cancer Physician Team
The gynecologic cancer team at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center includes gynecologic oncologists, who have specialized expertise and experience treating cancers of the female reproductive system. The team meets regularly to review all cases, examining treatment options, and developing coordinated management plans.
Steven Plaxe, MD, Gynecologic Oncology
Dr. Plaxe is Director of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology and a fellow of both the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the Cancer Prevention and Control Committee of the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG) and is Principal Investigator at UC San Diego for Gynecologic Oncology Group studies.
Cheryl C. Saenz, MD, Gynecologic Oncology
Dr. Saenz is an Associate Clinical Professor in Reproductive Medicine and a member of the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG), the largest multi-institutional organization conducting research into the treatment and prevention of gynecologic cancers. She is particularly interested in the preventative aspects of gynecologic cancer care and is dedicated to educating women at risk for cancer of the cervix, uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes.
Michael McHale, MD, Gynecologic Oncology
Dr. McHale's research interests include prevention strategies for pre-invasive disease, the impact of environmental factors on carcinogenesis, and clinical trials. He is currently the principle investigator on a multi-institutional, ovarian cancer trial for recurrent disease.
Arno James Mundt, III, MD, Radiation Oncology
Dr. Arno J. Mundt is an internationally recognized radiation oncologist in the treatment of gynecologic malignancies. He is Chairman of Radiation Oncology at the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center. His research focuses on the application of the new technology intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) in these patients. An accomplished researcher, Dr. Mundt has authored and co-authored more than 50 scientific articles, predominantly focusing on gynecologic oncology and IMRT.
Catheryn M. Yashar, MD, Radiation Oncology
Dr. Yashar's clinical and research focus has centered on breast and gynecologic cancers, especially IMRT, IGRT and brachytherapy techniques. Her surgical training can be invaluable for surgical issues, brachytherapy systems, implantation, and clinical correlation of imaging. Her clinical interest is in the field of women's health care. Evaluation of IMRT and IGRT as treatment methods for gynecologic cancer is an active area of investigation.
