Image Guided Radiation Therapy, Quality Control, Radiation Therapy

Dr. Jiang's research has focused on the application of innovative physics and engineering technologies to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of cancer radiotherapy.

Specifically, Dr. Jiang and his colleagues have been developing and implementing image guidance techniques for real-time tumor localization and for adaptive radiation therapy. They also work on projects related to patient safety and quality control. Currently, they focus on two tumor sites: lung and gynecologic cancers.

For lung cancer, respiratory motion has posted a big challenge for precisely delivering radiation dose to the tumor while sparing the surrounding normal tissue. Dr. Jiang and his colleagues have been developing fluoroscopic tracking techniques where implanted fiducial markers are not required.

For gynecologic cancer, patient and tumor anatomy often change from day to day and therefore adaptive therapy schemes are being developed based on patient's daily images and deformable registration methods. Using machine learning and data mining techniques, they are developing tools that can automatically find big human errors in the treatment plans. They also work on 2D/3D video based patient surveillance techniques.
