Dr. Erin Reid’s broad career goal is to contribute to the advancement of treatments and understanding of hematologic malignancies through design and conduct of clinical trials that utilize correlative studies to translate between important clinical and basic science observations.

Within this arena she is motivated to improve clinical trial designs for early phase therapeutic clinical trials in hematologic malignancies. With formal training through a Masters Program in Epidemiology and Clinical Investigation, she has had the opportunity to explore the limitations and strengths of different trial designs. Early phase clinical trials in malignant hematology are particularly challenging because of the relative rarity of these diseases.

Through her Master’s thesis Dr. Reid is exploring the applications of Bayesian statistics to clinical trial design, prospectively comparing Bayesian and Frequentist methods. Bayesian designs are well-suited to dealing with the problems faced in malignant hematology research, including small sample sizes, the necessity for multiple interim safety analyses, as well as the simultaneous monitoring of multiple outcomes.

One of the ways that she hopes to contribute to the field of Hematology is through promotion of more efficient and informative clinical research, whether it be at the level of an individual trial, or large-scale collaborations that we are capable of as a society.

Her current research endeavors include a translational project that she began during her fellowship at Stanford looking at in vivo turnover kinetics of monoclonal proteins and plasma cells as early biomarkers of disease activity and treatment efficacy in Multiple Myeloma. She is also continuing her interest in myeloid malignancies by developing translational projects in Myelodysplastic syndromes with colleagues at UCSD and at The Burnham Institute.

Finally, as the Hematologist for the Owen clinic at UCSD, Dr. Reid has the opportunity to treat a great number of patients with AIDS-related malignancies, including Kaposi’s Sarcoma and Lymphomas. In addition to participating in ongoing trials with the AIDS Malignancy Consortium, she is developing early phase trials for AIDS-associated lymphoma and Kaposi’s Sarcoma.
