Current research is focused on a neural cell adhesion molecule (L1-CAM), which cooperates with select integrins to promote tumor cell motility and invasion. Specifically, we have observed that L1-CAM potentiates the hapotactic migration and invasion of melanoma cells by promoting the activity of integrin avb3. Integrin avb3 has been shown to promote tumor survival and metastasis while recent studies have correlated L1-CAM expression with tumor progression. Understanding basic molecular mechanisms underlying the relationship between L1-CAM, integrins, and tumor metastasis is the primary objective. Further objectives include exploring a potential connection between the shedding of L1-CAM and tumor neovascularization and defining pro-metastatic signaling mechanisms that are triggered as a result of L1-integrin association.
