Patient & Family Support Services Team

Our team, led by Scott Irwin, MD, PhD, includes psychiatrists, psychologists, and other supportive care providers with expertise in treating patients and their family members who are dealing with cancer. We work as part of your oncology care team to round out integrated, whole-person care.

Director

Scott Irwin, MD Dr. Scott Irwin is a board-certified psychiatrist who directs Patient and Family Support Services. He strives to improve outcomes for those with progressive, potentially life-limiting illnesses and their families through leading-edge services, psychiatric research and program development. He is the author/co-author of over 100 articles, chapters and abstracts, and has been recognized at many levels for his innovative research, teaching and clinical endeavors.

Michelle Lemarie holds multiple specialty certifications, including Hypnotherapy Guided Imagery Practitioner and Healing Touch Practitioner. She also trained for four years in the Anamcara Program-Sacred Art of Living and Dying, graduating as an Anamcara (soul companion), a spiritual director.

As part of Patient and Family Support Services at Moores Cancer Center, she uses an eclectic approach tailored to the specific needs of her patients, including hypnotherapy, relaxation skills training, guided imagery, and healing touch. These tools are used to treat anxiety, panic, depression, trauma, pain, constipation, diarrhea, shortness of breath, and nausea so that her patients can achieve an improved quality of life. Ms. Lemarie was previously with UC San Diego's Maternal Mental Heath program, where she helped women with postpartum depression, anxiety, panic, trauma, and physical symptoms related to pregnancy. She also worked at San Diego Hospice and the Institute for Palliative Medicine, helping patients and their families to alleviate emotional suffering as well as their physical symptoms while living with cancer and complex diseases.

Ms. Lemarie is an active member of the American Hypnosis Association, the International Board of Clinical Practitioners, Healing Touch International and Spiritual Directors International.

She has presented her work at multiple professional meetings, including the 2014 Annual Assembly of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

Ms. Lemarie was born in New York City and raised in France, where she earned a master's degree in psychology and worked in a variety of psychiatric hospitals prior to returning to the United States.
