Palliative care psychiatry is the discipline of psychiatry within an interdisciplinary palliative care team.

Dedicated to the strengthening of meaning, value, resilience, transcendence, dignity, and improved quality of life, palliative care psychiatry provides relief of emotional suffering for patients and families dealing with complex, progressive and potentially life-limiting illnesses (e.g., cancer). It does this through a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach.

Our palliative care psychiatry team works directly as part of the palliative care service at UC San Diego Health System.

Palliative care is provided by a team of doctors, nurses, and other specialists who work with a patient’s primary team to deliver an extra layer of support.

Palliative care is appropriate at any age and at any stage of illness, and can be provided together with curative treatment, or when appropriate, become the sole focus of care.

"You matter because you are you. You matter to the last moment of your life, and we will do all we can . . . to help you . . . to live . . ."
