Asian Health Care, Cultural Competence, Cultural Informants, Palliative Care

Dr. Lim oversees a community partnership to reduce barriers to palliative care for terminally ill Asians with cancer, through the use of ethnically concordant palliative care liaisons/informants. The study investigates the effectiveness of using Asian Palliative Care 'cultural informants' for optimal palliative care services for terminally ill Asian patients. These informants, who are already Certified Healthcare Interpreters, will not only be helping the Asian clients in accessing the care they need, but will also be providing special training to hospice staff to create awareness about decision-making and responses to care in these cultures.

This study is a partnership between Moores UCSD Cancer Center and SDSU, together with two other community-based organizations -- San Diego Hospice & Palliative Care and the Union of Pan Asian Communities.
