My research focuses on the regulatory effects of parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) on lung cancer progression. PTHrP was discovered as the predominant factor causing hypercalcemia of malignancy, but it also has growth regulatory effects. The protein inhibits proliferation of cultured lung cancer cells and slows growth of orthotopic lung carcinomas (Hastings et al. Cancer 2001; 92:1402-1410).

Further, PTHrP expression is associated with increased survival in women with non-small cell lung carcinoma but not in men (Hastings et al. Clin Cancer Res 2006; 12:499-506). At present, the goals of my work are to establish the mechanisms for the effects on proliferation, tumor growth and survival and to evaluate the etiology of the sex dependence. Current data suggest that the sex dependence results from hormonal effects on expression of PTHrP and the PTHrP receptor.
